Colla Voce presents An Evening of Romantic Music

The chamber vocal ensemble Colla Voce will present a highly varied program of Romantic vocal music at Kathwood Baptist Church (map) on Tuesday, April 14, at 7:30 PM.

The program will include Trois Chansons (“Three Songs”) by the leading Impressionist composers Ravel and Debussy. Neither of these sets of pieces has been performed in Columbia in recent memory, and the Ravel may never have been performed.

The Debussy pieces are settings of three poems of Charles D’Orleans, (1391-1465), known as the father of French poetry. Charles, a member of the royal house of France, was captured at the battle of Agincourt and kept prisoner in England for 25 years. Debussy’s colorful settings capture his love for his wife, the mystery of Spain for both Debussy and Charles, and the nastiness of winter. Ravel, Debussy’s contemporary, sets his three songs to adaptations of the work of three French poets. “Nicolette” ”Three Birds of Paradise” is a lament for a young man who has been lost in the war. The third is a warning to children not to venture into the woods of Ormond as lots of frightening, though imaginary, creatures live there.

Sommerabend (“Summer Evening”) is a recently discovered set of 19th century works originally presumed to have been lost in the bombing of Berlin. The composer, Robert Kahn (1865-1951) was a friend of Brahms, and Brahms fans will love this work of nine short movements composed in 1897. Several members of the ensemble will be featured as soloists and Ann Wilson will play a prominent role as pianist. The program will also include art songs of other prominent 19th century composers performed by members of the ensemble.
